The NRCC Strikes Back

The National Republican Congressional Committee is weighing in on behalf of Kris Kobach with direct mail, hoping to keep its attacks under the media's radar.

Fortunately, KrisWatch is equipped with look-down/shoot-down radar and very little gets past it.^

One NRCC mail piece we've obtained attacks Dennis Moore for his votes against bans on so-called partial birth abortion (the 2003 ban Moore opposed has been struck down as unconstitutional because it does not provide an exception for the health of the mother) and the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act"* that gives an embryo or fetus the same legal rights as the mother, which lays a legal foundation for banning all abortions by overturning Roe vs. Wade.

Frankly, we're surprised by the NRCC's choice to attack on this issue, given Kris Kobach's extreme position on abortion and his need to win over moderate voters. With just a couple of tweaks (in bold below), the NRCC piece's punchline can very easily be turned on Kobach to great effect:

"No matter where you fall in the Life vs. Choice debate, it's hard to justify why someone would want to force a woman to carry her rapist's child to term. And it's unthinkable to force a victim of incest to bear her father's child. Somehow, it's no problem for Kris Kobach."

The other NRCC piece attacks Rep. Moore for voting in 2000 to direct the CIA Director to provide an unclassified (i.e. not secret) aggregate (i.e. total -- not line items) of the intelligence budget for the previous fiscal year (i.e. not this year's or next year's) -- a practice the CIA had voluntarily done in 1997 and 1998. The amendment was offered by then-Rep. Tim Roemer, who now serves on the 9/11 Commission.

Despite the fact that a Tom Clancy book contains more secret information than the amendment would have revealed, the NRCC piece accuses Moore of supporting terrorists as a result of that vote. Apparently, al Qaeda can determine our nation's intelligence operations based on a single number. "The Americans spent $26.61 billion on overall intelligence operations last fiscal year, not $26.62 billion -- the time to attack is now!"

Strangely, the NRCC didn't put Osama on the mailer -- guess they can't find him either.

* Always savvy marketers, particularly when it comes to naming things, Republicans renamed this bill "Laci and Conner's Law" to link it with a case that, frankly, hasn't gotten much coverage in the media.

^ KrisWatch also comes equipped with a cupholder, CD player and leather interior -- all standard. Act now and take advantage of 0% financing on all 2004 models.
