Really, Kris? Surely you can't mean this vote on passage of the Patriot Act in 2001: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2001/roll398.xml
Now we can't see too well, but isn't that a "Moore" in the "Yeas" column?
We knew Kobach would take votes out of context. What we didn't know is that he would just start making stuff up...at least this early.
Now after the speech, when he was apparently called on this by Brad Cooper of The Kansas City Star, Kobach was forced to fill in the details*:
Among other things, Kobach said, Moore voted against funding the portion of the USA Patriot Act that would allow federal authorities to obtain various documents, including library records, to track terrorists.
The vote that Moore cast was to block funding for authorities to inspect library circulation records, library patron lists, library Internet records, book sales records and book customer lists. The amendment failed with the House deadlocked at 210-210.
Rep. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and 17 other Republicans also voted with Moore. They must not like America either.
Bottom line: Dennis Moore doesn't think the government should snoop on you at the library or bookstore without a grand jury saying so. Kris Kobach thinks the permission of a secret court is enough.
Also, Kobach and the 93 US Attorneys currently making speeches to Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs claim the library and document bit has never been used. So why fund it? Unless it has been used...**
Dennis Moore: Standing up for freedom. Kris Kobach: Reading over your shoulder.
But besides Kobach, Cheney also spoke at yesterday's event. What did he have to say about Moore?
LJW: The vice president made no mention of Moore, who has represented the
overwhelmingly Republican district in Congress since 1999.
* Readers of the Star will see this, however readers of the Lawrence Journal-World will just read the false statement "[Moore] voted against the Patriot Act." Reporters: You have to question what Kobach is saying, otherwise he is going to take you for a ride.
** We're working on a more in-depth story about Kobach and the Patriot Act that will discuss this issue.
